Fluorite Miners - UK Mining Ventures
Mining, the extraction of valuable minerals from the Earth's surface, including marine environments, is a process deeply rooted in history. Durham boasts a rich mining heritage, with Coal and Lead standing out as the quintessential minerals associated with our region, though others were also extracted.
The Durham coalfield, spanning north, east, and central Durham, reached from the River Tyne and the North Sea to Consett and beyond Bishop Auckland to the west. From below Bishop Auckland, the southern boundary of the coalfield extended diagonally to the east coast, just north of Hartlepool. Coal, a prolific resource in County Durham, has been mined in significant quantities since medieval times.
Lead mining was equally vital in County Durham, centered in Teesdale and Weardale. Mining records in Weardale trace back to the 12th century, covering iron, lead, zinc, copper, silver, and barium. Limestone served as a crucial commodity for iron and steel production, while fluorite deposits, exploited for the same purpose, overlapped with the Durham coalfield, contributing to the historical growth of our own Consett Iron and Steel Industries.

In 2017, UK Mining Ventures Ltd took over the Fluorite mining at the Rogerley Mine near Frosterley, renowned for its daylight fluorescence. Expanding their operations, they initiated a new mine just west of Rogerley, the first in the UK for many years. Currently employing 15 local miners, they focus on extracting fluorite for the crystal collection markets, with plans to grow the workforce as new mineral deposits are discovered.
